Bird of Paradise

Perennial, Strelitzia reginae, Blooms are similar in appearance to a bird's head. The multi-colored bloom is 6 to 8" in length. Colors include orange, copper, blue and red. Very unusual flower. The plant likes temperatures above 50 degrees F, so in most places it is better to plant in a pot and keep indoors during the winter and move outside in the summer. Flower seeds are slow to germinate, taking up to 21-56 days to germinate or more. Soak the hard seeds for 24 hours and remove the orange tuff of hairs. Plant 1" deep in moist potting soil.
